How to Get VMware Workstation 17 Pro for Free

In this guide, I will show you how to download, install, and configure VMware Workstation 17 Pro, which is now free for personal use. The official download process through Broadcom can be difficult, so we will use a direct link to the installer. We will also cover advanced network configuration and how to create a Windows 11 Virtual Machine (VM).

Step 1: Download and Install Workstation 17 Pro

Since the official support portal is convoluted, use the direct link below to download the installer (approx. 245 MB).

Installation Process

  1. Extract the downloaded ZIP file.
  2. Run the installer executable.
  3. Accept the terms and click Next.
  4. Recommendation: Enable the "WHP" option to ensure compatibility with Windows Hyper-V features.
  5. Complete the installation with default settings.

Step 2: Advanced Network Configuration (NAT)

After installation, launch the Virtual Network Editor to configure a custom NAT network. This allows your VMs to share the host's internet connection while remaining on a private subnet.

1. Configure Subnet IP

Select the NAT network (usually VMnet8). Set the Subnet IP to something easy to remember, like 10.0.0.0 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

2. NAT Settings

Click "NAT Settings" and verify the Gateway IP is set to 10.0.0.2 (this will be the default gateway for your VMs).

3. DHCP Settings

Click "DHCP Settings" to define the range of dynamic IP addresses. For example, set the starting IP to 10.0.0.100 and ending IP to 10.0.0.254. This leaves IPs .3 to .99 free for static assignments.

Step 3: Creating a Windows 11 Virtual Machine

Now we will create a new VM using a Windows 11 ISO file.

1. New Virtual Machine Wizard

Click "Create a New Virtual Machine" and select your Windows 11 ISO. The wizard will detect the OS and prompt you to enable encryption.

2. Encryption and TPM

Windows 11 requires a Trusted Platform Module (TPM). Workstation Pro will ask you to set a password to encrypt the VM, which enables the virtual TPM. Choose a password you will remember.

3. Hardware Customization

Customize the VM hardware:

Step 4: Post-Installation & Snapshots

Once Windows 11 is installed and updated, it is crucial to create a snapshot.

1. Create a "Fresh Install" Snapshot

Go to VM > Snapshot > Take Snapshot. Name it "Fresh Install". This serves as a pristine backup point. If you mess up the configuration or get a virus, you can revert to this state instantly without reinstalling Windows.

2. Display and Network Verification

Use the "Stretch Mode" icon in the toolbar to fit the VM display to your window. Finally, check the network settings inside the VM (Settings > Network & Internet > Ethernet). You should see an IP address in the 10.0.0.x range with the gateway 10.0.0.2, confirming your NAT configuration is working.
