How to Rack Mount an APC UPS (SMT1500)

This guide demonstrates the process of unboxing, installing the rail kit, and configuring an APC SMT 1500 VA 2U UPS unit in a server rack. Proper installation ensures the unit is secure and cables are managed effectively for future maintenance.

Part 1: Unboxing and Inventory

Before beginning the installation, verify that all components are present. The APC package should include:

Part 2: Installing the Rail Kit

The rail kit enables the heavy UPS to slide securely into the rack. This specific model is a 2U unit, meaning it will cover six vertical holes in the rack.

1. Positioning the Rails

The railings are designed to have a wide edge to support the unit effectively.

Part 3: Mounting the UPS Unit

Once the rails are secure, you can install the main unit. Since the UPS is heavy, it is recommended to place it at the bottom of the rack.

1. Slide and Secure

Lift the UPS (using your knee for support if necessary) and slide it onto the rails. Once inserted, secure the unit to the rack using two screws on the right side and two on the left side. These screws primarily prevent the unit from sliding back and forth rather than bearing the full weight.

Part 4: Connecting the Battery

For safety during shipping, the internal battery is disconnected. You must connect it before operation.

  1. Remove the instructional sticker covering the battery port.
  2. Locate the large connector and the pull loop.
  3. Pull the connector slightly and plug it firmly into the battery port.
  4. Tuck the loop in neatly to ensure it is accessible for future battery replacements.

Attaching the Front Panel

Align the front panel bezel with the unit. It attaches via slots on the sides; simply slot it in and give it a firm tap to snap it into place.

Part 5: Cabling and Power

Connect the incoming power cable to the UPS and your devices (servers, switches) to the output ports.

Cable Management Tip: Route your power cables on the outside of the railings. This ensures that if you need to install or remove other units in the rack later, the power cables will not obstruct the slide rails.

Part 6: Initial Startup and Configuration

The UPS does not have a dedicated power switch for the unit itself, but it has a power button for the output. Upon plugging it in and pressing the button, the screen will launch a setup wizard.

1. Setup Wizard Steps

2. Self-Test

After the wizard completes, the UPS will automatically initiate a self-test to verify the battery and internal components are functioning correctly. Once passed, you can power on your connected equipment.
