How to Install Windows Server 2025 Evaluation for Free

In this guide, I will show you how to download and install the latest Windows Server 2025 Evaluation edition for free. This version is valid for 180 days, perfect for testing and lab environments. I will also include a bonus tip on how to extend this trial period legally using the "rearm" command.

Step 1: Downloading the ISO File

First, search for "Download Windows Server 2025" and navigate to the official Microsoft Evaluation Center. Look for the ISO download option, select your preferred language, and download the file. The file size is approximately 5 GB.

Step 2: Creating the Virtual Machine

We will create a new VM using VMware Workstation (or your preferred hypervisor).

VM Configuration

1. Select "Create a New Virtual Machine".
2. Choose "I will install the operating system later" to avoid automated "easy install" issues.
3. Select Microsoft Windows and version Windows Server 2025.
4. Name your VM and choose a storage location.
5. Disk Capacity: Set to 60 GB and store as a single file.
6. Customize Hardware:
   • Memory: 4 GB RAM (or more).
   • Processors: 2 CPU cores.
   • Network: Choose NAT or Bridged depending on your network needs.
   • CD/DVD: Select the downloaded Windows Server 2025 ISO file.

Step 3: Installing Windows Server

Start the VM and boot from the ISO. Follow the installation wizard:

• Language & Time: Select your preferences (e.g., English, Swedish).
• Install Type: Choose "Install Windows Server" (Clean install).
• Image Selection: Select Windows Server 2025 Standard Evaluation (Desktop Experience). The "Desktop Experience" version includes the full GUI, whereas "Core" is command-line only.
• Disk: Select the unallocated space (60 GB) and click Next.

The installation will proceed and reboot automatically. Once complete, you will be prompted to set the password for the built-in Administrator account.

Step 4: Extending the Evaluation Period

The evaluation license is valid for 180 days. You can extend this period (rearm) multiple times, giving you potentially years of free usage for lab purposes.

Check License Status

Open PowerShell or Command Prompt as Administrator and run the following command to see the remaining time and rearm count:

slmgr /dlv

Look for the "Time remaining" and "Remaining Windows rearm count" fields.

Rearm Command

When your trial is nearing expiration (e.g., a few days left), run this command to reset the 180-day timer:

slmgr /rearm

Restart the server for the changes to take effect.
